*** It is a tradition that just before Easter, Polish households prepare an Easter basket filled with items that will be eaten on Easter Sunday during the celebratory breakfast. On Holy Saturday, these baskets are taken to Church and blessed by the priest – and you don’t need to be Polish to participate! Traditionally, the basket would contain a Lamb (made of sugar, dough, butter or chocolate) – the symbol of the Risen Lord, some boiled eggs (also some painted or decorative ones) – symbols of the new life, a small loaf or a few slices of bread – the symbol of Jesus in the Eucharist, some ham/meat – the symbol of the lamb slaughtered at the Jewish Passover, a horseradish sauce (or any other ‘bitter herbs’) – the symbol of the bitterness of Passion, a piece of homemade cake – the symbol of sweetness of Salvation, and salt (and pepper) – a reminder that Christians are supposed to be the salt of the earth. Prepare the basket with the products that you already have at home, do not worry about the missing ones. Place the ready basket in the fridge or in a cool place to await the Easter breakfast.
